The 14(A) Chennai Seminar was held this year at MGM Resort on 14th & 15th of July, 2014.

The gathering commenced with brisk registration as scheduled in the morning of 14/July. Once the customary introductions were completed, the new KLSM President, Capt Toshikazu Saito San, addressed the delegates. In the opening speech, Capt Saito San was very generous in sharing his entire career growth, including his rise to the top. An entire working life span dedicated to serving K-Line, which is demonstrative of the achievements one can look forward to, through hard work and dedication. Capt Saito San recalled the time of the 1990's when KLSM first associated with Indian Seafarers and appreciated the fruitful relationship that has developed over the years gone by. He was appreciative of the fact that the Indian Seafarers have contributed, and continue to contribute, their professionalism and skills for safe operation of KLSM vessels, specially the energy vessels. Capt Saito San thanked everyone for their continuous support to KLSM and sought a continuance of good work in the years ahead as well. He spoke about the current situation of K-Line, and the importance of safety & ZERO OBSERVATION. He then concluded his speech with many gracious thanks to all the officers for their good performance onboard.

Action of CMS: by Capt. H. Otsuda (KLSM Tokyo – CWG)
Capt. Saito San's presentation was followed by Capt. Otsuda San, Group Leader of Crewing Group, Tokyo, with regards to CMS (Competency Management System). In his presentation he put forth the importance of CMS and explained how CMS will help in skill development and career growth for KLSM Seafarers. After all, the seafarers will benefit from CMS which has been developed in-house, and is company specific, providing a uniform platform for learning to all it's pool members. At the conclusion of the presentation, the delegates had a short tea break followed by a group photograph.

Post tea session began with a presentation from Mr. Fukuzawa san, covering the “Injury Prevention” based on incidents and near misses within the KLSM fleet. Fukuzawa San described the sequence of events relating to recent cases, and lessons learnt from those, specially the injuries sustained by the seafarers. Motive of this presentation was to encourage awareness by following safety procedures, and to establish behavior based safety on-board.

Close on the heels of this brilliant presentation, Capt. Rele San took the podium to speak on the rather (in)famous topic of  Piracy & Robbery. He described the recent incidents faced onboard offering solutions such as the type of precautions that could be taken for the loss incurred if such cases do actually occur. Another very relevant and interesting topic on Stress Management & Team Building was presented by Capt. Mohit Gupta san, addressing the most important topic “STRESS “which is commonly faced by every person. He explained ways & remedies to overcome stress. This topic has of late gained a lot of importance in the shipping world due to rising cases of stress amongst seafarers, and the need to work together as a team.

The session once concluded, was followed by lunch along with the families who had joined the Seminar. In order to prevent boredom, and thereby perhaps some stress, ample arrangements were made for the families for Shopping visit downtown to refresh themselves and explore the city.

Post lunch the seminar proceedings resumed, with the next session. To make it interesting, participative and interactive, Groups were formed namely - 2 groups - Deck and Engine. The, Deck group was assigned the task of Investigation & Case study which was presented by Mr. Naveen Chikkara (KLSM-SGP) whereas the Engine group who took up the task of Machinery Incident Investigation & Case study was done by Mr. Obenini Rao (KLSM-SGP). Capt. Deguchi San then further gave a presentation on Case study, Cargo system accident investigation and workshop. There was much interest and enthusiasm amongst the participants, with a conclusion of the session leading to a tea break.

After a refreshing tea break the Seminar moved ahead with the next session conducted by Mr. Obenini Rao on Environment Awareness. Mr. Rao’s interesting presentation was followed up by another presentation by  Capt. Rele San on KYT+ (Kiken Yochi Training) wherein he explained about how KYT+ contributes in indulging knowledge about prevention of injury.

The first day of the Seminar ended up with tons of knowledge and information shared across all ranks and profiles, followed up with cocktails & dinner along with officers’ families and children with entertainment such as traditional bharatnatyam, magic-show and fortune teller’s accompaniment which concluded the first day of the seminar.

The second day of the Seminar also commenced with great enthusiasm as it was started off with an interesting activity conducted by Capt. Juvale San on Emergency procedure & TTX explanation. This section was conducted so as to set an example what can be done in case of emergency and different ways to tackle them.  It was carried out by division of officers into various groups who interacted with interesting answers and ways to get through any emergency which can be identified and lessons learnt from the same.

At the end of the exercise the team who tackled the situation given to them the best amongst all the teams, was declared the winner. and gifted a prize from President Capt. Saito San. Soon after this interesting activity there was a presentation on Serious Misbehavior by Capt. Otsuda San which concentrated mainly on the behavior of seafarer onboard highlighting the importance to abide the rules & regulations strictly.

A tea break followed this presentation.  On the second day too, interesting activities had been planned for the families which was a “Visit to Mahabalipuram”-  famous for its ancient stone carvings and also known as one of the 7 wonders of India.

After an energizing tea break the next part of the session was by Capt. Rele San on VDR Analysis wherein he presented a recent case study. This was followed up with a presentation on Vetting observation by Capt. Deguchi San explaining the importance of the aim to achieve “Zero observation”

Soon after completion of these two presentations, it was lunch time, and everyone proceeded for lunch, complemented with mouth-watering desserts.

The post lunch session commenced with a presentation by Capt.  Juvale San on How to carry on Incident investigation? This session mainly elaborated on the subject how an incident investigation can be carried out. An exercise was conducted as an example on what preventive measures can be taken and what could be done in such cases; officers actively participated in this session.

Close on the heels of this interesting and participative session the next topic lined up was just as important a topic but one which is indeed neglected and ignored too. Any guess? The topic was on Health, Hygiene and Cleanliness onboard presented by Capt. Bhadsavle San highlighting their importance of training to be given to juniors on this topic.

It was time now for a short tea break and then proceeding towards the next interesting session at the end of the seminar, a presentation of on onboard experience by Captain Vincent Fernandes on usage of internet nowadays, a very interesting presentation on misuse of internet and to be very particular about the pictures captured and put about on various social sites on the net and their implications. This was followed by a presentation by Chief Engineer Ramasamy Prabaharan who expressed his thoughts and appreciation towards working in KLSM atmosphere, and the working culture of the company. The next session the famous Open Forum, one of the more interesting sessions in every seminar, wherein the seafarer would get an opportunity to

Share their views, voice their opinions, which includes suggestions, grievances and any other matter which any seafarer is permitted to speak up on.

The seminar was then concluded with speech addressed by Capt. Shigeta San (K-line Tokyo MHRG), Mr. Hasegawa san, Mr. Fukuzawa san,(DPA), and Capt. S. Fukuda (KLSM SGP) thanking everyone for their presence and cheered them for their excellent performance onboard. Distribution of loyalty awards and Participation certificates was lined-up.

A closing speech to end up this warm gathering was given by none other than Capt. Koji Higashijima san (C.E.O & M.D) KLSM-Mumbai, thanked one and all for their warm presence and support for the Seminar & KLSM, requested for the same continuous support as always.

This is how the 2nd day of the seminar ended up with a closing night of cocktails and dinner with families with a couple to entertainment geared-up the night
